Chhath Puja 2025 – Importance, Rituals, and Spiritual Significance of Sun Worship

Chath Puja 2025

Importance of Chhath Puja – The Festival of Sun Worship

Introduction

Chhath Puja is one of the most ancient and revered Hindu festivals, primarily celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal. This sacred festival is dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (Mother Shashti), who are worshipped for health, prosperity, and longevity. Unlike other festivals that involve idol worship, Chhath Puja focuses on worshipping the visible form of God — the Sun.

The word “Chhath” means “six”, as the festival begins on the sixth day of the Kartik month’s Shukla Paksha. It is celebrated with immense faith, discipline, and purity for four days, symbolizing gratitude to nature and the cosmic energy that sustains life on Earth.

Historical and Mythological Significance

According to ancient scriptures and legends:

  • It is believed that Draupadi and the Pandavas performed Chhath Puja to regain their kingdom and remove their sufferings.
  • Another legend says that Lord Rama and Sita performed the Sun worship (Surya Arghya) after returning to Ayodhya, marking the beginning of this ritual tradition.
  • In the Rig Veda, there are hymns dedicated to the Sun God, and the Chhath rituals are considered to have originated from Vedic times.

Thus, Chhath Puja holds a divine connection between humans and the cosmic source of energy — the Sun.

Four Days of Chhath Puja Rituals

1️⃣ Nahay Khay (Day 1)

The first day marks the beginning of purity and devotion. Devotees take a holy bath in rivers or ponds and clean their homes thoroughly. They prepare a simple meal of lauki-bhaat (bottle gourd with rice) cooked in pure ghee, which symbolizes cleanliness and sanctity.

2️⃣ Kharna (Day 2)

On this day, devotees observe a day-long fast that ends in the evening after sunset. They prepare a special prasad made of gur (jaggery), rice, and milk known as kheer, along with fruits. After offering prayers to the setting sun, this meal is shared among family and neighbors as a symbol of love and unity.

3️⃣ Sandhya Arghya (Day 3)

The third day is the most significant. Devotees, dressed in traditional attire, gather on riverbanks or water bodies during sunset to offer Arghya (water offering) to the setting sun. The atmosphere becomes divine with Chhath songs, mantras, and the glow of thousands of diyas. This ritual expresses gratitude for life, energy, and the blessings of nature.

4️⃣ Usha Arghya (Day 4)

The final day begins before sunrise. Devotees offer Arghya to the rising Sun, symbolizing the renewal of life and hope. After prayers, they break their fast with Prasad, marking the end of this holy festival with peace, positivity, and divine energy.

Spiritual Significance

Chhath Puja is a festival of discipline, purity, and devotion. It emphasizes the importance of sunlight for physical and spiritual well-being. The Sun is the source of all energy, and through this puja, devotees express gratitude for sustaining life.

The festival also teaches values of:

  • Self-control and mental strength
  • Gratitude toward nature
  • Harmony between human and environment
  • Faith and family unity

Scientific Aspects

Beyond its religious essence, Chhath Puja also has scientific relevance:

  • Fasting detoxifies the body.
  • Standing in water and sun exposure improves circulation and energy levels.
  • Prayers and meditation enhance mental focus and peace.

Conclusion

Chhath Puja is not just a festival — it’s a celebration of the Sun, nature, and human spirit. The rituals of fasting, cleanliness, and offering prayers reflect our gratitude toward the cosmic energy that gives life. Observing Chhath with devotion purifies the soul and strengthens one’s connection with the divine.

Chhath Puja teaches us that true spirituality lies in simplicity, purity, and gratitude.
