Hartalika Teej 2025: Vrat (व्रत), Puja Vidhi (पूजा विधि) & Significance (महत्व)

hartalika teej

Introduction

Hartalika Teej is a sacred Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. It falls on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapada month (August–September). Women observe Hartalika Teej vrat (व्रत) for marital bliss, the well-being of their husbands, and fulfillment of desires. The festival also holds significance for unmarried women who keep the vrat (व्रत) to get a good husband like Lord Shiva.

Significance (महत्व) of Hartalika Teej

  • It symbolizes the divine union of Shiva and Parvati.
  • Observing this vrat (व्रत) brings prosperity, health, and happiness.
  • Devotees believe that Goddess Parvati blesses women with marital harmony and a strong bond with their husbands.

Puja Vidhi (पूजा विधि)

  1. Women wake up early, bathe, and wear traditional attire (often green, red, or yellow sarees).
  2. Create idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati using clay or sand.
  3. Decorate the idols with flowers, clothes, and ornaments.
  4. Offer fruits, sweets, betel leaves, and specially prepared food.
  5. Recite Hartalika Teej vrat katha (व्रत कथा) and perform aarti.
  6. Women observe nirjala vrat (निर्जला व्रत) — fasting without food and water — until the next morning.

Vrat Rules (व्रत नियम)

  • The vrat (व्रत) is strict and often observed without consuming water.
  • Married women observe it for their husband’s long life.
  • Unmarried girls keep the vrat (व्रत) to get a suitable husband.

Story (कथा) of Hartalika Teej

According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Parvati wanted to marry Lord Shiva. But her father, Himalaya, had promised her hand to Lord Vishnu. To avoid this unwanted marriage, Parvati’s friends (sakhis) secretly took her into a dense forest. There, she performed severe penance (tapasya) without food or water.

Pleased by her devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and accepted her as his wife. Since Parvati’s friends (sakhis) had “harit” (taken away) her to the forest, the vrat came to be known as Hartalika Teej (from “harit” = abduction and “aalika” = friend).

This story (कथा) symbolizes the power of devotion, willpower, and pure love.

Spiritual Message

Hartalika Teej vrat (व्रत) teaches devotion, sacrifice, and marital loyalty. It is not just a religious ritual but also a reminder of the spiritual strength of women and their deep faith in divine blessings.

Hartalika Teej 2025 is a festival of devotion, faith, and sacred bonding. By observing the vrat (व्रत) and performing puja vidhi (पूजा विधि), devotees seek blessings of Goddess Parvati for a prosperous married life, health, and happiness.
