Panchak (पंचक): Meaning, Effects, and Scriptural Insights

Introduction

पंचक (Panchak) in Vedic Astrology is the period when the Moon passes through the last five नक्षत्र (Nakshatra) of Aquarius (Kumbha) and Pisces (Meena) zodiac signs. According to ज्योतिष शास्त्र (Jyotish Shastra) and the गरुड़ पुराण (Garuda Purana), the deeds performed during this time carry special कर्म फल (Karmic Effect). Certain activities are considered inauspicious in this period, while spiritual activities and acts of charity can be extremely rewarding.

What is Panchak?

The word “Panchak” means “Five” – here, it refers to the five Nakshatras in Aquarius and Pisces:

  • From the third quarter of धनिष्ठा (Dhanishta) Nakshatra
  • शतभिषा (Shatabhisha)
  • पूर्व भाद्रपद (Purva Bhadrapada)
  • उत्तर भाद्रपद (Uttara Bhadrapada)
  • Until the fourth quarter of रेवती (Revati) Nakshatra

This period occurs once in every lunar month when the Moon transits through these five Nakshatras. The exact dates of Panchak are calculated using the Panchang (Hindu calendar).

Effects of Panchak

According to Garuda Purana, any task performed during Panchak may produce five times the result — whether positive or negative.

As per traditional beliefs, one should avoid the following activities during Panchak:

  • अंत्येष्टि कर्म (Funeral Rituals) – Performing last rites during मृत्यु पंचक (Mrityu Panchak) is believed to cause repeated deaths in the family.
  • छत निर्माण (Roof Construction) – Fear of frequent repairs and expenses.
  • दक्षिण दिशा की यात्रा (Travel towards South) – Considered inauspicious.
  • लकड़ी या घास का संग्रह (Collecting wood/grass) – Associated with misfortune.
  • नई खरीददारी (Buying a new bed) – Believed to bring health issues.

Types of Panchak

  1. रोग पंचक (Rog Panchak) – Begins on Sunday. Brings five days of physical and mental stress. Considered inauspicious for all auspicious ceremonies.
  2. राज पंचक (Raj Panchak) – Begins on Monday. Considered auspicious. Brings success in government-related work. Favorable for property-related dealings.
  3. अग्नि पंचक (Agni Panchak) – Begins on Tuesday. Brings legal disputes. Inauspicious for construction, tools, or machinery-related work.
  4. मृत्यु पंचक (Mrityu Panchak) – Begins on Saturday. Brings hardships comparable to death, with risk of accidents or injuries.
  5. चोर पंचक (Chor Panchak) – Begins on Friday. Travel is prohibited. Avoid financial transactions or business deals to prevent losses.

Is Panchak Auspicious or Inauspicious?

Panchak is not entirely inauspicious. Some Panchaks are considered शुभ पंचक (Shubh Panchak) and are highly suitable for spiritual acts like जप (Japa), दान (Daan), and पूजा (Puja).

If essential work must be done during Panchak, remedies prescribed in scriptures should be followed.

Remedies for Panchak Dosh

  • Worship Lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva.
  • Donate blankets, food, or essential items.
  • Chant “ॐ नमः शिवाय” (Om Namah Shivaya) or “ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय” (Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya) 108 times.
  • If a funeral occurs during Panchak, make four effigies and perform symbolic rites for them to neutralize the dosh (defect).

Conclusion

पंचक (Panchak) is not merely superstition but a time calculation in Vedic Astrology that helps determine auspicious and inauspicious periods. By following the remedies mentioned in scriptures, one can avoid negative effects and use this time for spiritual growth.
